How a Lazy Dietitian Finally Started Exercising

I thought exercising just wasn’t for me.

I tried the gym thing during college and that worked okay because it was convenient. But I didn’t really enjoy it. And, I never felt like I got a great workout. It kind of felt like a waste of time, but something that I was supposed to be doing. Now, I’m too cheap to pay for a gym membership especially since it wasn’t working great for me.

I got into running for a while because I wanted to run a half marathon, but I’m just not a good runner. And then I ended up getting a stress fracture on my foot. That was in 2013 and I still can’t run more than 3 miles without it starting to hurt.

I tried at-home workouts, but I’m a lazy-ass. I just can’t push myself when I’m at home alone. The only time I got a good workout in was when my husband joined in, which was maybe once a week.

I also did 10-minute workouts in the morning at home (check out that post here!). They were perfect because I didn’t have a lot of time to spend exercising and since they were short, I could usually push myself pretty well. Looking back now, they definitely don’t include enough cardio, but are great if you’re just starting to exercise or if you don’t have any time.

After all that, I convinced myself that I could be healthy by living an active lifestyle without ever actually exercising.

Oh boy was I in some serious denial.

Because, yeah, you can be pretty healthy and not workout, but exercising is so good for you!!

Here are just a few things I’ve discovered now that I’m adding high-intensity cardio and weight training into my life:

  1. I have more energy
  2. I feel awesome about myself. Serious confidence booster!
  3. I’m getting toned and my body shape is changing. I’ve lost and gained weight before, but my body shape has always been relatively the same, either bigger or smaller. But my clothes literally fit differently (I have saggy-butt in all my pants! Who can complain about that?!)

So how did this lazy-ass dietitian start exercising and actually stick with it?

Here’s my NUMBER ONE TIP: Find a workout you LOVE.

Because if you don’t like it, you’re not going to keep doing it. And when life gets tough, you’ll find excuses.

My exercise of choice is Cardio Barre – it’s basically lightning speed ballet in an exercise class form with loud, dance music. I honestly couldn’t ask for anything better! If I’m having a bad day or if I’m stressed about something, I can go workout, and I feel like a new person.

But YOU have to find what works for YOU.

Exercising does not have to be going to the gym or going for a run. Those are great ways to exercise, and they work well for a lot of people, but if it doesn’t work for you, FIND SOMETHING ELSE!

It doesn’t matter what workout you choose, but it should get your heart rate up and work your entire body.

After taking Cardio Barre, I realized that I love fitness classes because I need someone standing in the room telling me what to do and watching me to make sure my lazy-ass doesn’t come out. If you haven’t tried group fitness classes before, check out deals in your area and try out a few to see if any stick.

There are also a TON of great workout videos online. These are great if you need something quick, if you don’t have access to a gym, or for when the weather is awful.
